How to create more balance in your home and work life?

Why is it that only 10% of people are considered to be highly productive in the workplace? Why is that nearly 80% of people are not fully satisfied with their jobs? What if there was a place where people saw work in a totally different way—one where they didn’t feel they “had to go to work” but rather “were excited to show up & make a difference”? Imagine a place where people didn’t feel they had to leave who they are at home and come to work to be someone different? Imagine a workplace where you get to make decisions everyday based on the way you feel is the right way to do business and treat people?

Life is so short that we all struggle trying to figure out more ways to get the most meaning and pleasure out of our short time here on earth. Unfortunately most of us see work as something that disrupts our ability to find the meaning and pleasure we so desperately seek in our lives. It’s probably why so many folks struggle with balancing home and work life. What if there was a different way of approaching this balance in our life where instead of trying to find ways to spend less time in the work place and more time at outside we actually found ways to give our work more meaning and purpose so that our lives became more enjoyable? We believe there is a way for people to find more balance and as a result become more fulfilled in life.

It starts with increasing the amount of time you spend with people who fulfill you. You see Life is about people and the quality of your life is reflected in the amount of time you spend each day with people who are able to add meaning and joy to your life- at work or at home. If you want to find a way to get the most out of your life you must increase the amount of time you spend with people who fulfill you. This is why we constantly seek more time away from work so we can spend it with people who we believe add more meaning in our lives. But yet we find it so difficult to keep up with all the responsibilities we hold in the workplace and finding time to spend with the people we enjoy. But the answer to solving this question just might be changing the way we select our employment. We have been condition to look at things like employee benefits, compensation, job titles, and room to advance. But little attention is ever given to the very thing that has the most impact on our happiness in life- the quality of people we spend our time with each day. Have we ever taking the time to compare our material assets with our relationships? Imagine the loss of one of your most expensive items you own and compare that to losing one of your most precious relationships? Which one would have a greater impact on your life? On the other hand what would add more pleasure in your life over the next few years- fancy clothes, jewelry, automobile or a really close relationship with a family member or friend who shares the same values as you?

One of the best places to start adding more meaning in your life is to pick the right place to work. Many of us will spend nearly 50% of our adult life commuting to, working in, or thinking about our jobs. So how is it that we can get the most out of life if we are not being fulfilled in a place that encompasses most of our life? I think this is why our work falls short of fulfilling us.  When you look at the actual workload of most jobs over time they can become less interesting, less challenging, exhausting, stressful, and even defeating. It is rarely the work that will fulfill us or give us any true meaning. What really gives us the meaning and joy is the type of people we interact with every day.

At driversselect.com we have the opportunity to give work an entirely new meaning for people by creating an environment that focuses on bringing together individuals with diverse backgrounds who can add meaning and joy to one another.  We achieve this by selecting people who hold the same values of transparency, learning, taking ownership and celebrating small successes every day while having a burning desire to go the extra mile to create a workplace that is more desirable than any major corporation in America.  While other companies might offer greater health and financial benefits we will strive to be competitive in those areas but be unmatched in our culture. We won’t offer jobs to people but rather responsibilities they own in a way which allows them to see their contributions to the company, customers and community.  We will build a culture where people value themselves less on the paycheck they receive and more on the contribution they make in other people’s life. We will approach our work with passion and purpose as opposed to just chasing profits. We see profits not just as a return to shareholders but as a mechanism that gives us the fuel to continue to hire more people who can add joy to our lives, serve our customers in way that fulfills in their lives and provides us the opportunities to make Texas a better place to our children to grow up in.

Tough Times can be Great Times

Over the past few weeks things have slowed up. Even though this seems to happen around the beginning of April every year we seem to put these times behind us. I guess people are caught up doing their taxes and certainly don’t want to spend money on a new car when they owe the IRS (most people who got tax refunds bought cars in February and early March). So when things get slow many people get frustrated, down on themselves, bored, and in some cases negative. This type of reaction to a problem prevents you from seeing the “good” opportunities in tough times. First we should always remember that we have little control over things like government affairs, the weather, the economy, etc. But we do have total control over our attitude and the choice of where we spend our time each day. We can choose to look at tough times as bad luck or we can look at them as opportunity to grow and prepare for better times. instead of spending our time complaining (which burns so much mental energy) we can redirect that mental energy into things like “game filming”. Similar to what professional athletes do, we can use the slow times to step back outside of our daily roles, rewind the tape, and take a look at our own job performance. We can do self assessments, peer assessments, review some of our most recent work habits, as well as learn from others who might still be doing well despite the tough circumstances. We can use this time to study, learn new skills, and practice good habits we have forgotten . I believe that people grow the most in tough times not good times. In tough times we find out who has the resilience, the creativity, the passion, the heart, the will to fight, and the desire to be successful. We also find out who the quitters and nay-sayers are. You develop more mental toughness in the tough times. You see when things are good it is often the environment and economy that is good not the people. People simply ride the wave down easy street. Some get greedy, some get content, some just coast, etc. But this lack of continuous improvement starts to show up when times get tough. That is why in tough times the winners stand out. So lets not forget that even if tough times we still have a lot more control over things than we may think. The two most important things we can control are the attitude and the choice of where we spend out time. We can see these times as an opportunity to improve and get better than our competition or we can choose to sit back and complain. Only one of these choices will move you further ahead. I believe each day we either move further ahead or get left further behind- but i don’t think any of us stay in the same place. So you should know you can control what direction you are moving in. You don’t need to have success everyday to stay on the road to success. You just have to stay behind the wheel long enough

Ask before telling

One of the most powerful concepts I am just learning to grasp is the practice of asking questions before giving your answers, recommendations, or suggestions. So many times I am impatient about solving the problem and thus reluctant to hear from the insights and ideas from others. But I have discovered how ineffective this makes me as a leader . There are several major drawbacks to this approach. First when you have to come up with all the answers, suggestions, and recommendations for a problem you actually burn a ton of your mental energy. But when you step back and ask others for their opinions, insights, solutions, and recommendations you actually conserve your mental energy and use their energy. Secondly, when you give all the input you prevent others from being heard. I have found that I am much better off gathering ideas for others and allowing them to take their ideas into action as opposed to having them act on my ideas. In many cases I not only find that by asking more questions I get better ideas but I find that even if the idea is not all the great it still works better than the one I give. The reason for this is “motivation” to do the job far out weighs the “knowledge”" of the job. In other words people will put more heart and passion into ideas they come up with as opposed to implanting my ideas. Finally there is a third benefit to asking questions upfront. You actually get better information before forming your opinion. This leads to better and smarter decisions. If you fail to ask these questions first you kill any opportunity to get fresh ideas that could be better than yours. So going forward I have made a commitment to start asking more questions before giving input or recommendations. Tapping into the knowledge and motivation of many people will produce much better results in just about every case.

Tacos

$

Really reminded me of Fuzzy’s Tacos; nice laid-back atmosphere & wide selection of tacos; I was not all that impressed with the baja shrimp taco, but the “rusty taco” was pretty good. Worth the price if you’re in the area and are craving tacos.

The Best Way to Advance in Your Company

For many people they have a burning desire to advance in their company. so define advancement as taking on new titles or responsibilities while others define it more monetary terms or even the amount of influence or “clout” they have within the organization. While there are many different approaches to take that lead to advancement there is one more powerful and has the greatest potential for you to advance into the highest levels. THIS IS THE ABILITY TO “ADVANCE OTHERS”. That’s right the best way to advance yourself is to start working on things that hep others in your organization advance. You would be amazed at the contributions and impact this makes in any organization. One of the biggest (if not the biggest) challenges organizations face is the ability to grow and retain top talent. If you can find a way to assist your organization in the recruiting of good people and help them advance then you by default become one of the most valuable resources your company holds. Most people look internally and focus their attention on self serving ways to advance. But those that look to advance others also find that they start to build huge emotional equity and influence. People are attracted to those individuals that they feel have their best interest in mind (they also look to bring down those with egos or self serving agendas). So if you have the burning desire to advance in your company then the best way to assure your success is start focusing on ways that advance your teammates. The more you advance others the more valuable you become and further advancement you can achieve
